چکیده
Background: Lassa virus disease (LVD) is of public health concern in endemic countries Africa. Majority infections are asymptomatic while symptomatic cases can mimic other infections. This study was aimed at determining the clinical features seen children with positive PCR and symptoms that determine outcome LVD an community, Southeast Nigeria.
Materials methods: It a prospective observational enrolled 183 met criteria for suspects. These were subjected to polymerase chain reaction test (PCR). Structured questionnaire used obtain relevant information from suspects.
Results: Twenty-four out PCR, giving positivity rate 13.1%. The odds having result about 4 times history abdominal pain (OR= 3.65, p= 0.010) 3 fever suspects vomiting 2.63, 0.040). However these had low sensitivity predictive values 42% 28% pain, 42%, 23% respectively. Seven 24 died during period, case fatality 29.2%, bleeding (83.3%) poor urine volume as major causes fatality.
Conclusion: Vomiting though common presentations besides fever, LVD, therefore cannot predict result. Awareness creation after 2 days treatment febrile illness advocated.

Lassa fever and Marburg virus disease.
In the light of progress in virology, it comes as a surprise to discover a disease, an epidemic disease moreover, caused by a "new "virus. This has happened twice in recent years. The diseases, Marburg virus disease and Lassa fever, are caused by unrelated viruses that are highly pathogenic for man and both have been responsible for illness and death among laboratory scientists and medical pers...
متن کاملDetection of Lassa Virus, Mali
To determine whether Lassa virus was circulating in southern Mali, we tested samples from small mammals from 3 villages, including Soromba, where in 2009 a British citizen probably contracted a lethal Lassa virus infection. We report the isolation and genetic characterization of Lassa virus from an area previously unknown for Lassa fever.
متن کاملCharacterization of Lassa virus cell entry and neutralization with Lassa virus pseudoparticles.
The cell entry and humoral immune response of the human pathogen Lassa virus (LV), a biosafety level 4 (BSL4) Old World arenavirus, are not well characterized. LV pseudoparticles (LVpp) are a surrogate model system that has been used to decipher factors and routes involved in LV cell entry under BSL2 conditions. Here, we describe LVpp, which are highly infectious, with titers approaching those ...
متن کاملReplicon system for Lassa virus.
Lassa virus is endemic to West Africa and causes hemorrhagic fever in humans. To facilitate the functional analysis of this virus, a replicon system was developed based on Lassa virus strain AV. Genomic and antigenomic minigenomes (MG) were constructed consisting of the intergenic region of S RNA and a reporter gene (Renilla luciferase) in antisense orientation, flanked by the 5' and 3' untrans...
متن کاملImported lassa fever in Germany: molecular characterization of a new lassa virus strain.
We describe the isolation and characterization of a new Lassa virus strain imported into Germany by a traveler who had visited Ghana, Côte D'Ivoire, and Burkina Faso. This strain, designated "AV," originated from a region in West Africa where Lassa fever has not been reported. Viral S RNA isolated from the patient's serum was amplified and sequenced. A long-range reverse transcription polymeras...
